One more note about that shitty infographic.
The data it uses was collected between 2000 and 2004, making it almost 5 years old. That remains the most recently published data. The actual figure (straight from the data source) reported is 392,681 deaths per year, but does not include deaths caused by second-hand smoke and fires caused by cigarettes (and I’m not convinced it even should, for the latter). The report itself also notes six further limitations on the data.
So, not only is the data used for that infographic so old that it’s irrelevant (how many smoking bans were in place by 2004?) and based on unreliable data (the cohort studies, confirmed in the report), it was actually rounded down from 443,000 to 440,000 (as reported by the CDC).
Oh, and the data source that infographic cites is actually completely incorrect, since it came from the CDC not ASH.
I’m all for educating on the dangers of smoking, but let’s at least be honest about it.
