Clannada is another doujin shmup I really like. It’s fairly textbook in terms of gameplay, but the stuff shooting at you is just absurd. (The moe are a fairly standard theme in these games, for obvious origin-related reasons.) Flying stars, party hats, and lumps of goo are about as weird as the first stage gets, but the second stage introduces playing cards, and then the third stage sees you shooting at a god-damned violin. Fourth stage boss? Cup of tea. Literally, it is a cup of tea. Not the hardest shmup in the world, but it’s one of the nicest looking, and one of the most fun. (I can’t tell, because I’m not Japanese, but I’m pretty sure the link only provides a trial copy of the game. I think you know what to do if you’re desperate for the full version, but here’s a little pointer, just in case.)
